The newly developed 5-speed automatic with manual shift mode now provides for even faster gear shifting, virtually free of any delays. The smart fortwo offers a user-friendly automatic gear program - which does away with the need to use a clutch pedal. A feature you'll find particularly convenient in town and city traffic. The new transmission also features a kickdown function which changes down by one or two gears when appropriate. Simply press the accelerator right down to harness the engine's full power potential.

Steering wheel gearshift.
For sportier gear shifting and even more driving fun you can change gears using the shift paddles on the 3-spoke leather sports steering wheel. Which means you’ll never have to take your hands off the wheel. Alternatively, you can also use the gearshift lever. (Standard on passion).

5-speed automatic with manual shift mode.
The 5-speed automatic transmission allows for manual shifting for ultimate control. Just move the shifter to the left to engage manual mode. Forward shifts result in up shifting and pulling back on the shifter results in down shifts.
